What is Comhaltas?
Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann is the largest group involved in the preservation and promotion of Irish traditional music. We’re a non-profit cultural movement with hundreds of local branches around the world, and as you can read in our history we’ve been working for the cause of Irish music since the middle of the last century (1951 to be precise). Our efforts continue with increasing zeal as the movement launches itself into the 21st century. www.comhaltas.ie
There are 9 Comhaltas branches in Offaly:
Ballyboy, Birr, Brosna (Clara/Tubber/Ballycumber area), Edenderry, Killeigh, Rahan, Rhode, Tullamore, and West Offaly (including Banagher, Cloghan, Lusmagh, Ferbane, Shannonbridge, Shannonharbour, Belmont & surrounding areas). There is a very vibrant traditional music scene in Offaly & our branches are open to anyone who wants to learn to play an instrument, speak Irish, dance, sing or simply to listen & enjoy. Check out the branch links on information about classes which usually run during the winter & spring. We also have many hugely talented musicians in the county who compete at provincial & All-Ireland levels. Offaly has hosted the All-Ireland Fleadh on 3 occasions. There are regular trad sessions taking place throughout the county. Come and see for yourself!
